A WARRINGTON Collegiate student has been shortlisted for a national radio award just six months after the Winwick Road college hit the airwaves.

Daniel Miller, who is studying interactive multimedia, was instrumental in helping the college set up W.A.C Radio on April 23 covering news, current affairs, music and entertainment.

He was trained by the Student Radio Association at Media City and also came up with the station's name and logo.

The first record played was #Selfie by The Chainsmokers.

Now station manager Daniel, from Orford, has been nominated for the National Student Radio Awards, which is supported by industry giants like BBC Radio 1 and Global.

The 22-year-old is also the only college contender in the best newcomer category which is usually dominated by university students.

Daniel will be heading to London for the awards ceremony at the Indigo O2 Arena in London on Thursday, November 6.

He said: “I’m delighted to be shortlisted in what looks like a quality field. In six months we’ve come a long way from music, interviews and jingles to 24 hour streaming with a huge range of music, new DJs, exciting new programmes and interviews as well as outside broadcasts.

"I’d also like to say a big thank you to the Student Radio Association for their support in guiding us though the radio world and their training day at Media City where I learnt a lot about presenting, producing and how to use media platforms to create brand awareness. "Of course the biggest thanks go to Sharon Lawrence for putting me forward and for supporting me through the evolution of student radio at Warrington Collegiate into the successful brand it is today.”

Sharon Lawrence, IT Lecturer at Warrington Collegiate, who nominated Daniel, added: “This is an amazing achievement for a student.

“Since the launch in April, Dan has attracted new listeners and created a really professional service.

"He has led the way on outside broadcasts, obtained exclusive interviews with new bands just entering the music scene, even attending a press conference by Warrington Wolves and secured one-to one interviews with Stefan Rachford, Warrington Wolves skipper, and Tony Smith, Warrington Wolves head coach.”

Daniel also said that he plans to continue studying and developing his career in the radio industry at the end of his course at Warrington Collegiate next year.
