AN APPLICATION to demolish the former Penketh Tavern on Greystone Road and build 36 apartments in its place has been withdrawn after residents' uproar over proposed parking restrictions.

Plans were submitted by Warrington Housing Association on August 29 for a three-storey block containing one and two bedroom apartments for over 55s, complete with car parking, bike and bin storage and landscaping works.

The site has the grave of a soldier in its grounds.

The plans received more than 30 written objections from residents.

One said: "Once again a new build with less parking spaces, 19, than dwellings, 36, giving no allowance for residents who run two cars, visitors or service vehicles.

"Due to the age of 55 for eligibility for these dwelling many residents will have one or more vehicles.

"So Honiton Way shopping precinct, library and the Conservative Club car parks will now become an extension of this car park as no road side parking will be allowed on this junction and bend, which is almost blind."

Another wrote: "This proposal is completely out of character with a residential area containing mainly two storey houses.

"The proposed building looks like a fortress."

Most objections raised concerns over the lack of car park spaces, more congestion on a dangerous 'blind bend' and the 'disrespectful' relocation of the listed war memorial.

Occupants of bungalows and houses next to the proposed site also stated their concerns over lack of privacy with the three-storey dwelling.

Others were supportive of more social housing being built but also expressed their concern over the lack of car parking spaces.

James Kelly, from PRP Architects, acting on behalf of Warrington Housing Association withdrew the plans on Tuesday with a view of re-submission of a ‘materially’ similar scheme, reduced in number with a higher proportion of parking.
