A CAMPAIGN group ‘standing up’ for Brexit will hold a peaceful protest in the town centre on Saturday.
Warrington was one of the areas that voted to exit the EU in the referendum in 2016 – with Leave winning 62,487 votes in the town, which amounted to 54.3 per cent.
Cross-party Warrington for Brexit was launched to ‘stand up for Brexit’ in the town.
In October, Warrington’s borough councillors backed a motion calling on the council to support the need for a People’s Vote on the final deal.
Campaign group Warrington for Europe is also backing calls for the vote.
But Warrington for Brexit is urging politicians in the borough to respect the result of the referendum.
In a statement, the group said: “We are for peaceful protest against those who seek to overturn the result of the democratic vote of 2016 and to put pressure on the representatives of our town to represent that result.”
Both of Warrington’s Labour MPs, Helen Jones and Faisal Rashid, voted against Theresa May’s Brexit deal as she suffered a crushing defeat on Tuesday.
In the biggest defeat for a sitting Government in history, the Prime Minister’s deal was rejected by 230 votes.
The peaceful protest takes place at the Skittles from 11am to 2pm.
