I WAS disappointed to discover that our Christmas lights in Warrington are being switch on on November 9.
That is two days before Remembrance Day.
This year of all years, with the commemoration of the end of the First World War foremost in people’s minds, I find it highly insensitive that the council should deem it proper to light the town up for Christmas two days before the acts of remembrance take place around the town.
Surely waiting another week would not have been a problem.
It is not only insensitive towards those killed in the war (which included my grandfather, once a teacher in Warrington), but also to those killed and injured in the conflicts since, and many of the people who took part in these are still with us today.
I would be interested to know what the members of the British Legion think of this, not only in Warrington, but around the country.
Sadly Warrington is not the only place where this insensitive act is happening – Liverpool and Manchester, among others, are also turning on their lights before Remembrance Day.
Some of our buses are now showing, alternating on their destination screens, ‘Lest We Forget’.
It seems our council has done.
