A WAR memorial has been preserved for generations to come after being moved to a care home.
The Warrington Armed Forces Community Support Hub and charity Warrington Community Living have worked in partnership to relocate the memorial previously located in the grounds of the Penketh and Great Sankey Royal British Legion Club to Heathside Care Home in Penketh.
Following the closure of the club, the memorial had been under threat.
But the new site at Heathside Care Home, around 400 metres from the original site, will allow the community continued access to the memorial in order to pay their respects.
Trades people and volunteers from the 75 Engineer Regiment (V) volunteered their skills and worked with the Warrington Armed Forces Community Support Hub on renovating the memorial and building its new home.
The new memorial was officially unveiled by the Mayor of Warrington Cllr Karen Mundry on Thursday, November 1.
After the service, 18 residents of Heathside and neighbouring Heathside Mews – care homes run by Warrington Community Living – were presented with ministry of defence veteran’s lapel badges.
WCL chief executive Michael Sheppard said: "We are happy to offer a home to this important memorial so that the local community can continue to pay their respects.
"The day was a wonderful opportunity to show our respect to the older veterans who live at Heathside and neighbouring Heathside Mews."
Armed forces veteran’s lapel badges were launched in 2014 by the minister for veterans, in order to assist the wider public in identifying veterans of the Second World War.
Future Royal British Legion marches on Remembrance Day will be rerouted past Heathside Care Home and the war memorial.
