A MUM was able to keep her hair despite undergoing chemotherapy, thanks to an innovate new technique used during her cancer battle.

Tracey Savage, from Fearnhead, was diagnosed with stage two ovarian cancer in October last year.

She was ‘devastated’ to learn that she would lose her hair due to the side effects of chemotherapy.

But the mum-of-three learned about a ground-breaking cooling treatment that would allow her to keep her hair.

As part of the Paxman scalp cooling system, Tracey wore a cold cap before, during and after each of her chemotherapy sessions at the Lilac Centre at St Helens Hospital.

She said: “When I found out I would lose my hair during chemotherapy I was truly devastated.

“I had researched the Paxman scalp cooler, and I knew that I was going to give it a go no matter what.

“There was no way I was going to lose my long hair without a fight.”

The treatment allowed Tracey to keep her illness private, and to keep her self-confidence.

She is now volunteering on the unit she was treated in, offering support and advice to patients.

Her top tips to those undergoing chemotherapy include only wash their hair once a week and allowing it to dry naturally.

Tracey also combed her hair twice-a-day, tied it back with a soft scrunchie at night and slept on a silk pillow case.

She added: “All I lost was strands, never clumps - I can honestly say my experience with the cap has been amazing, I am proof that it can work.

“I was able to still look like me all the way through this horrendous journey - I didn’t want to be seen as a cancer victim, especially in front of my children.

“I cannot thank Paxman enough for making this horrendous experience much more bearable.”
