TWO men have been released pending further investigations after a police chase across the town.
Shortly after 5pm on Sunday, officers attempted to stop a black VW Golf on Winwick Road near the town centre.
But the car fled the scene, triggering a police chase.
A force spokesman said: “The vehicle failed to stop so officers began to pursue it at a safe distance as it travelled into Birchwood.
"The team also requested assistance from the National Police Air Service.
"After approximately 20 minutes officers cancelled the pursuit, but continued to monitor the vehicle from above.”
A short time later the vehicle came to a stop in Risley and two men fled the area on foot.
Following a search, the two suspects were arrested on suspicion of a number of offences.
A 23-year-old man, from Golborne, has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving and theft of a motor vehicle.
A 28-year-old man, from Wigan, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, drug driving and theft of a motor vehicle.
Both suspects have been released pending further enquiries.
