PARENTS have renewed their calls for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on Padgate Lane.

The parents and guardians of pupils at St Oswald's Catholic Primary School have been lobbying Warrington Borough Council for a cross to be installed following the removal of a lollipop lady service in 2016.

Antony Cottam, whose two sons attend the school, set up a petition for a crossing to be installed on Padgate Lane.

The petition has so far been signed by more than 300 people.

He said: "The lollipop lady left two years ago and they never replaced her.

"There should be a crossing anyway because of the school.

"Trying to take your kids across is horrendous.

"Last year, three children nearly got run over.

"You get motorbikes going down there at 60 mph or 70mph every night, and the speed that people go down there in the morning is 40mph or 50mph.

"It's an accident waiting to happen."

Traffic in the area has only been worsened by the closure of Birchwood Way westbound due to roadworks.

Antony, who lives on Padgate Lane, added: "Now that Birchwood Way has been shut, it’s gotten even worse - the traffic is absolutely horrendous.

"This is only the second of four phases of it, so it could be going on for another five years.

"In Bewsey there are two crossing on Longshaw Street within the space of 50 yards, going from the kids’ play area onto the field.

"On O'Leary Street, they have two crossings and a lollipop man.

"How is that possible when Padgate Lane is a busier road?

"By the time we get a crossing, my kids will have left for high school."

A Warrington Borough Council spokesman said: "An assessment has been carried out and we will shortly be consulting with local residents on the next steps."
