MUMS are being invited to attend a new support group for parents and teenagers.

The group has been set up by mum Valerie Kilby, and aims to offer emotional support on a range of issues.

Mum of two Valerie lives in Wilmslow, and set up the Wilmslow Teenage Support Group for Parents to offer help on subjects including mental health, bullying and social media.

The first meeting of the group is to be held at the Suburban Green restaurant in Hawthorn Lane, Wilmslow, on Tuesday, February 13, at 7pm.

“We have about 13 mums who are definitely coming to the meeting, and another eight who are maybes,” said Valerie, who has a 12-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son at Wilmslow High School.

“The meeting will be a very informal get-together and an opportunity for everyone to build relationships and trust.

“There will be a questionnaire to find out from people what issues they would be interested in discussing and what they want from the group.

“There is a huge unmet need for emotional support for parents as well as their children, and the group aims to gain a greater understanding of the issues children have to deal with today and to see how we can support each other.

“There are so many issues which our children have to cope with, including the impact of social media, which our generation did not have to face.

“When parents are going through issues with their children such as anxiety and depression they can feel very isolated and alone, and the group aims to support their emotional needs and empower them.”

The group is due to be held once a month, and will feature talks by professionals.

A mum is due to speak about her experiences at the March meeting.

Valerie is leading the group with the support of two fellow mums, and stressed that anything discussed at the meetings would be in the strictest confidence.

She promoted the first meeting by setting up a Facebook group through Wilmslow Mums, and anyone interested in attending can ring Valerie on 07772 446368 or visit the Facebook group Wilmslow Teenage Support Group for Parents.
