A FORMER police officer is working with a charity to raise awareness over dangerous drugs.

David Betts, who served with Cheshire Police for 30 years, has taken up a new role with the Drug Watch Trust.

The 63-year-old said: “A lot of the time people hear about drugs, but they don’t really understand what they can do the body, or the long-term effects.

“It’s very important that people are aware of the dangers.”

David’s job is to now develop the Insight programme.

It is aimed at spreading awareness about the damage drugs can cause when taken socially and in the workplace, the risks of addiction and how to stay safe.

He wants to roll it out to schools, community groups and businesses.

“We want to identify the types of drugs that are around, from legal highs to heavy substances,” said David.

“I’m trying to develop that Drug Watch work across the whole county.

“Insight is about teaching people what the dangers are, how to avoid them and how not to get involved in drugs. It is all about awareness.”

David previously managed crime reduction initiatives in Warrington for Cheshire Police and has also worked on CID and as a patrol officer in the town.

He told the Guardian he needs support to deliver the awareness programme and is in discussions with linked agencies and drug action teams.

“I’m asking other agencies and local authorities to get in touch so we can reach as many people as possible,” he said.

“I want to develop community links to deliver this programme so I’m asking anyone who can help to get in touch.

“The best part of my life was doing community safety work, and this new role is like coming home.”
