HOW can Peel, the owners of Warburton Toll Bridge, be expected to maintain this valuable asset by charging motorists just a 12p toll.
While a rise of £1 appears stiff and has certainly annoyed locals, as well as Warrington councillors, what is the alternative should this bridge close?
If this was to happen, the cost to motorist for a round trip via Warrington or Salford would be far more than the £2 to take the round trip, not to mention quite an amount of their additional time particularly in heavy traffic.
However, should Warrington councillors, who are obviously seeking to be popular, feel so strongly about this increase, perhaps they could suggest contributing to the upkeep of this private bridge out of the borough rates.
I use the bridge regularly and will willingly pay £1 each way simply for the convenience.
