I WANTED to write in response to the story about the Carlton Club and the many memories (Warrington Guardian, April 8).

I have so many happy memories of that place.

As Cllr Linda Dirir says though, it was not just a 1980s and 1990s place.

I went regularly in the 1960s and saw some of the biggest stars on the planet there – not just Warrington.

It was an amazing thing to have here and looking back, I feel so lucky to have lived through that.

I agree with a lot of what she said.

We don’t have many cultural things to savour in Warrington so it would be great to think that Sankey Street could be turned into somewhere special.

For so many of us, America and Americans were a big part of our life growing up.

But now, there is almost no record of their time in Warrington other than the excellent Heritage Centre and some names in Chapelford.

Wouldn’t it be marvellous to think that we could have an American Quarter in Warrington?

As more and more people of my age grow older, I do worry that this incredible part of our history will be consigned to books and with no living history left.
