IF there is one misleading slogan of this election campaign, it must be ‘Let’s get Brexit done’.

It will not ‘get it done’ because leaving would cause at least some business uncertainty, while embroiling the Government for several years in a fiddly process of negotiating new arrangements, so diverting energy from the real problems of this country – low skills, low social mobility, low investment etc – that have nothing to do with Europe’ (Boris Johnson in the Daily Telegraph two weeks before he plumped for supporting Leave rather than Remain in February 2016).

Worse, the same Tory infighting that gave us the referendum, and gave us the present mess, will continue, with many Tory MPs already taking a disastrous ‘no trade deal’ stance should they ‘get Brexit done’. German comedian Henning Wehn expressed it best: ‘Remain or Leave was the wrong question; it should have been do you want Normality or Never-ending palaver?’
