IN reference to your article in the Warrington Guardian regarding elderly motorists, I agree with much of what is said and I am glad that the RAC Foundation research finds that it is not the older age group that causes the most accidents.
I am an 85-year-old driver and feel confident on the road but wondered about a ‘second opinion’.
After watching the TV programme ‘100 years old and still driving’ I contacted the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) which runs an assessment scheme for older drivers and I had an assessment.
It lasts about 30 minutes and most of the assessors are retired police driving instructors.
Afterwards the assessor said he felt very safe with me (phew) and then we had a 20-minute review during which he gave me helpful tips and assurances on my driving.
I would recommend this scheme very highly to any older drivers and now only await the car insurance companies to take it into account when renewing my premium – but I won’t hold my breath.
