IN reference to the appeal in last week’s Warrington Guardian, the Thomas Gill who was killed in the First World War and came from Forshaw Street was my grandfather.

He was my mother’s father, and as you can see, my middle name is after his and my mother’s single surname.

We have been to the Menin gate and seen his name listed.

It was very emotional to see it there. I used to go to grandmas in Forshaw Street. Granddad was 28 when he died.

He was a medic and was shot attending to a wounded soldier.

My mother was only three at the time.

My grandfather had three sisters, but no brother as far as I know.

I am the only grandchild.

I hope this answers a few questions for Darryl Cooper.
