I AGREE with a lot of what ‘The Fly’ said in his column last week about the events that led to the referendum (Warrington Guardian, September 6).

Unfortunately he makes some errors along with a cheap unworthy point about sending his dentist back?

We’ve already committed to allowing those who are here to remain, and there will of necessity be a seasonal workers’ visa available.

He talks about ‘little Englanders’.

It would be more appropriate to talk of ‘little Europeaners’ who are afraid of the future and who think the fifth largest economy in the world can’t possibly survive on its own.

The £350 million per week gross contribution the Fly mentions is not a lie. People don’t stop complaining about their gross tax contribution when it’s pointed out that they don’t pay much at all since it is offset by all the benefits the state provides like education, health, police etc.

Furthermore, although we do get grants from the EU they come with conditions. In the case of infrastructure grants, match funding is required and we might otherwise prefer to use that money elsewhere.

Talking about a gross £350m is neither unreasonable nor inaccurate.

The Fly also misrepresents what was written on the famous bus. It did not say the money would go to the NHS.

He also raises the question of the Irish border.

One simple solution is to tell the EU we are not erecting a border, our border is open and we have no wish to collect any tariffs on goods coming to the UK.

After all a tariff free world is the direction of travel for most western countries.

If the EU want to erect a hard border on the Irish side for imports to Ireland then that’s up to them.

I doubt Mr Varadkar would be too happy when the EU arrive and start constructing one.
