I WAS very interested to read your report about the fake roofer conning local homeowners, and was pleased to see he was brought to justice (Warrington Guardian, August 2).

I would like to share with your readers my experience with a fake roofer so that they can be aware of this scam.

This is a complete mystery to me and maybe I will never get to the bottom of it.

On Tuesday, July 17 I rang a reputable roofer in Warrington about a leak I had in my roof and we arranged for him to come to look at it on the Saturday.

The following day I received a phone call from someone saying he was this same roofer (using his name) and he was free to come straight away which I agreed to.

This man came, looked at the work and said he could do it straightaway for £350, would give me a guarantee and receipt but had no card machine so it would need to be cash.

So I went to get the cash while he started the work and was surprised to return 20 minutes later and he was waiting as the job ‘was done'.

I have since tried to ring this person many times as I thought he must have given the receipt and guarantee to my husband prior to me paying him, but of course he hadn’t, and of course my calls always go to his message bank.

I then became concerned for the reputable roofer whose name this person appears to be trading off.

I phoned the first roofer and he came around straightaway as he was also very concerned about this matter.

He even went up on the roof and took photos of the dodgy work that had been done and is also trying to contact this person.

Neither of us can work out how this person got my details. This man was not just a door knocker, he had my name and phone number and knew I needed a roof repairing.

The genuine roofer was as shocked as myself and he, like me, is mystified and would love to get to the bottom of this.

I want to make your readers aware of this scam but would also like to hear if anyone else has had the same problem.
