WARRINGTON Wolves’ dramatic victory over St Helens on Saturday broke Super League viewing records, it has now been revealed.
A peak audience of just over 500,000 people tuned in to watch The Wire’s golden-point victory at The Halliwell Jones Stadium, with George Williams booting over the winning drop goal in extra time.
The match was broadcast simultaneously on Sky Sports + and BBC Two and across the two channels, the match average figure of 385,000 viewers is the highest for any play-off game since they were introduced in 1998.
The previous high was the 2022 semi-final between St Helens and Salford Red Devils at 330,000 for a game that was also dual-cast on Sky Sports and Channel Four.
Saturday’s game was the first play-off contest to be shown live on the BBC, with the game kicking off at a primetime 5.30pm slot as opposed to the lunchtime kick-offs Channel Four had been showing over the previous two years.
