MATTY Ashton will miss Warrington Wolves' clash with Salford Red Devils on Sunday.

The winger - The Wire's leading try-scorer with 10 touch-downs this year - has been ruled out of contention by head coach Daryl Powell having suffered a glute injury.

However, it is expected he will be back to face Catalans Dragons at Magic Weekend next weekend.

Powell also used his pre-match press conference to rule out on-loan St Helens prop Kyle Amor, who continues to recover from a hamstring injury.

"Kyle Amor, obviously Joe Philbin, and Matty Ashton will be missing, but we’re pretty strong," Powell said.

"We won’t be too far from what we put out there last week.

"Matty had real bad bruising on his glute. We’re not really sure how it happened but it hampered him during the game last week.

"We’ve decided not to risk him but he should be fine for next week."

In better news, Powell said Jake Wardle had "a strong chance" of making his Wire debut against the Red Devils.

The on-loan Huddersfield Giants centre joined his new teammates for training for the first time earlier this week.

There was also further comment on the season-ending injury suffered by Joe Philbin, with Powell saying he does not expect him to miss much - if any - of the 2023 season.

The prop suffered an ACL injury against Hull FC on Friday.

“He’s got an ACL which is one of the worst but to be honest, he’s in really good spirits and has handled it really well.

“He’s got a long road back but these things happen. I thought straight away that’s what it was when he went down.

“It’s hugely disappointing for him but he’ll get a lot of support. The medical department at this club is absolutely fantastic.

“He’ll get everything he needs and looking at the timescales, he’s not going to miss too much of next season if any.”
