WARRINGTON Wolves head coach Daryl Powell has confirmed the full extent of the knee injury suffered by Joe Philbin during Friday’s win over Hull FC.

The prop forward, who confirmed his season was over on social media last night, has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury similar to the ones teammates James Harrison and Greg Minikin have just completed their recoveries from.

Philbin is scheduled to have an operation on the injury – suffered during the first half of The Wire’s 4-0 win – tomorrow and the usual recovery time is between six and nine months.

This would mean that, in the worst case scenario, the 27-year-old would likely miss the start of the 2023 season.

“He’s got an ACL injury, which is probably one of the worst in terms of time,” Powell told the Guardian.

“It’s hugely disappointing for him and for us. He’s just been getting into some good form, was working hard and was desperate to have a crack at the World Cup.

“That’s the game – it’s pretty cruel at times.”

The Warrington-born forward is the only player to have featured in all 17 of The Wire’s games during this season.

"Well 2022 that's a wrap," he wrote on Instagram.

"Definitely not gone the way I planned it but now it's time to put all my energy into recovery and coming back a different beast in 2023."
