CONNOR Wrench’s long-term future lies with Warrington Wolves, it was confirmed last night.

The academy graduate confirmed during the broadcast of last night’s defeat to St Helens that he had signed a one-year extension to his current deal.

The deal is yet to be officially announced, but that would tie Wrench to his hometown club until at least November 2024.

After Daryl Powell challenged him to hold down a spot on the wing following news that Josh Charnley’s expiring contract would not be renewed, Wrench put in an excellent display in the 12-10 defeat.

Having set up Gareth Widdop for the opening try, the 20-year-old came so close to winning the game for his side in the final minute having broken through, only to be stopped by a superb covering tackle from Saints’ Tommy Makinson.

“It is great to have young players tied down. They’re the future of the club,” head coach Powell said.

“The fact we’ve got players so young but so advanced is outstanding.

“I got questioned a fair bit about Josh Charnley not being in the team and Josh is a really good player, but Connor Wrench is the future of the club.

“The more experience he gets this season, the better off he’ll be going forward.

“Obviously he’s got to keep his position – we’ve got Greg Minikin coming back into the mix and it’s good to have some challenge for that position.”

Wrench has scored four tries in his six appearances so far this season, and 11 in 14 senior games for the club so far.

Most of his game time has come in the centres, but Powell believes the England Knights international’s searing pace is best used out wide for the time being.

“At the moment, I think he’s best on the wing,” he said.

“It takes a little bit of pressure off him playing in the centre, and he’s got genuine speed.

“It creates opportunities – he obviously nearly won the game for us and he set the first try up.

“Once he starts believing in himself a little bit more, you never know.

“I think we’ve got three real good quality young players there in the outside backs at the moment.

“Ashy (Matty Ashton) is a little bit more advanced that Connor but they’re both similar sort of quality.

“Josh (Thewlis) is a quality outside back as well. We’ve got riches in that position.”
