THE first half of Warrington Wolves' win over Castleford Tigers last night has been described as among their best 40 minutes of rugby this year.

However, not everybody was totally convinced as The Wire blew their hosts away to lead 26-0 at the break in a game the Tigers needed to win.

After the game, Sky Sports pundit Phil Clarke believed the scoreline did not accurately reflect how the first half had actually gone, calling some of Warrington's tries "freaky."

Clarke also commented on the red card issued to Mike Cooper in the second half as Castleford fought back but did credit the "youth and speed" in the Wire side going into the play-offs.

"I think their youth and speed are very important in the play-offs," he said.

"I didn’t think the best team were leading.

"A lot of good experts thought Castleford would win today so to put that into context, Warrington will be pleased to get back on the bus and go home having won.

"With the way that first half went, with those freaky breakaway tries that happen sometimes in a season but not often, the half time score wasn’t an accurate reflection of how the first 40 had gone.

"Ultimately, their only worry going home I think is Mike Cooper.

"I don’t know Mike Cooper’s disciplinary record, but he might be nervous for next week."

Matty Ashton's third try of the evening gave The Wire a 32-0 lead before the hosts stormed back into contention.

They scored four quick tries to close to within eight points, aided by Cooper's red card and a yellow for Josh Charnley.

England half-back Luke Gale, whose Leeds Rhinos side may end up facing Warrington in the play-off eliminator next week, was Sky's guest pundit in-studio and believes Steve Price's men "let themselves go a bit" after the break.

"I still think Steve Price will be disappointed by the way they frittered out in the second half, but they got the job done," he said.

"They were ruthless but they definitely let that slip in the second half.

"They will be happy they’re in the play-offs. They’ve won but I just think they let themselves go a bit."
