RUGBY League World Cup organisers have held what they describe as "constructive" discussions about how to move forward following the withdrawal of Australia and New Zealand.

The Australian Rugby League Commission and New Zealand Rugby League announced last week that they would not be sending teams to England for the tournament later this year, citing Covid-19 concerns.

It is a decision that has attracted fervent criticism on these shores, with RFL chairman Simon Johnson calling it "parochial, selfish and cowardly."

Before news of Australia and New Zealand's withdrawal, RLWC2021 had confirmed the tournament – due to start on October 23 – would be going ahead as planned.

Now, they say meetings around "achieving the best possible outcome for the tournament" will continue this week.

"The Rugby League World Cup 2021 have held an emergency board meeting following the hugely disappointing statement made by ARLC and NZRL," a statement read.

"The board conducted constructive discussions on the best way forward for the tournament and will continue dialogue with all stakeholders, including the UK Government, in the coming days.

“The well-being of all those involved in the tournament, particularly players and team officials, have been the priority for the organisers.

"The board reiterated the relentless hard work and extraordinary measures that have been taken to create a world class environment in line with other major sports events that have been successfully hosted in the UK this year.

“The board will meet again in the coming days but in the meantime will continue to concentrate its efforts on being solutions focused and achieving the best possible outcome for the tournament."
