MIKE Dench is an angler who enjoys all aspects of our sport.

Last week he went salmon fishing on the River Ribble before targeting bream at Budworth Mere on Monday.

He started his session by introducing half-a-dozen Jaffa-sized balls of groundbait which he topped up regularly while waiting for the bronze beauties to find his feed.

Casting a heavy slider and double maggot, he was soon into roach of just over a pound.

Then, out of the blue, followed a first bream that was soon followed by another.

Everything went quiet though after he changed to a feeder, so he switched to worm before bringing in eight more bream.

Paul Bibby reports having a field day at Ackers Pit on Saturday, catching mainly small roach.

He went back to basics, using his favourite method of running line with a flat, one-inch peacock like we used to years ago.

He enjoyed a no-hassle and relaxing day despite having to watch a pair of feeding cormorants that rested on the footpath undeterred by people walking past.

Alan Brown made the most of a favourable draw to claim victory in our disabled and over 60s match, switched this week to the River Mersey from the Bridgewater Canal.

He fished pole and maggot to fill a net of roach and skimmers weighing 5lbs.

Rod Frazer won our Tuesday Series match on the River Mersey with a net of 10-9-0 of roach and perch caught on the usual pole and maggot.

Ray Boden was the runner-up, but upped his game to win on Saturday with a haul of 10-9-0.

Weights were down during our Mersey Series match on Sunday, when Neil Buist won after putting 3-10-0 – made up of half-a-dozen skimmers, roach and perch – on the scales.

They were caught on both feeder and pole methods with maggot at the business end.

Our association headquarters at 52 Parker Street are open every Friday, between 7pm and 9pm, for memberships, subscriptions, night-permit renewals and any queries.
