THE big event on Saturday is the Shimano Carp and Coarse Academy in conjunction with Adlington Angling Centre.

It is being held in the region for the first time, and never before has Shimano done it as a joint carp and course event – that makes it a huge coup for the area.

Worthington Lakes, on Chorley Road at Standish, is the host venue so get down there if you can.

Everybody can get one-on-one tuition without charge as well as expert advice on baits, rigs and set-ups.

The carp section will be hosted by Mike Dagnall and James Young, who will help put those extra yards on your casts with the TX2, TX5 and TX9 rods.

Meanwhile Shimano ace Nick Speed will demonstrate all of the match gear.

There will be a full range of our products in the marquee with Simon Bates, Nick Worrell and Robert Milne passing on technical info while David Fuidge does his popular rig clinic.

Our Disabled and over 60s match on Monday had a change of venue to the River Mersey at Kingsway, where it was won by veteran all-rounder Derek Bibby.

He put together a nice net of skimmers, roach and perch for a weight of 8-2-0.

Meanwhile Barry Chambers showed he can still catch a fish or two, finishing as runner-up with 5-3-0 of roach and perch taken on pole and maggot.

Match organiser Ray Boden celebrated a double on the River Mersey, following a success on Saturday with another in our Briars Cup Open the next day.

He demonstrated his mastery of the pole with a roach and perch catch weighing 11lbs taken on maggot.

Chris Ray took second prize with a haul of 8-5-0 that included a bonus 5lbs bream taken on groundbait feeder and maggot.

Adopting the same tactics on Sunday, Ray landed 10-14-0 to claim first prize ahead of Neil Buist who fished pole and maggot for 9-13-0.

Our association headquarters at Parker Street are open every Friday, between 7pm and 9pm, for memberships, subscriptions, night-permit renewals and any queries.
