MANY thanks to the member who gave me the ‘as its happening’ information regarding five poachers fishing floating bread on Ackers Pit on Sunday.

His prompt action enabled our bailiff to react within minutes. Due to the large numbers of ducks and the resident swans, floating baits are banned on this fishery so imagine how it would reflect on our club if these poachers had hooked a swan or a duck.

They were in such a hurry to leave that they left a rod behind. Perhaps the ‘loser’ would like to contact me and, following the court case for ‘theft of fishing rights,’ the magistrate may direct that it be returned to the owner!

Ackers is worth a visit according to Mike Pritchard, a regular contributor to this column who enjoyed a session there on Saturday fishing his favourite waggler method.

He fed maggot and pinkie catching roach from 3ozs to 6ozs every cast, but a change to caster brought fish of a better stamp around 10ozs plus an eel of 1 ½lbs.

In a couple of hours, he had around 9lbs of fish and another angler on a peg near reeds was evidently bagging up on the tench that we stocked some time ago.

Neil Plunkett went to Grey Mist last week and, as the tench fishing has not been great for him this year, he decided to try without maggots as he had been catching a few eels and switched to a plethora of baits pellets, corn, meat and boilies all at range and sat watching silent alarms for seven hours!

Neil returned on Monday armed with maggots and tried the feeder without success, so he got out the trusty waggler rod and fished close in where he had seen buzzers hatching.

The net result was 22 nice perch and eight roach, not what he set out for but not a bad end to the day. That’s fishing!

Our disabled and over 60s match on Monday was fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge, where our vice president Geoff Brooks was the winner with 3lbs 9ozs 12drs.

He fished pole at 11 metres, catching mainly small roach on pinkie. Committee member Graham Belton was the runner-up with a weight of 2-14-10.
