WOOLSTON Rovers' under 11s soccer team have beaten off fierce competition to win a six-a-side tournament in Ellesmere Port.

Rovers, who will play in Warrington Junior Soccer League Under 12s Division One in the 2006/07 season after three successive promotions, came out on top in the Princes Villa competition, which brought together 16 teams from Merseyside and Cheshire.

Woolston only progressed through their group on goal difference but went on to win their quarter-final and semi-final ties.

That set up a final against Aston and a double from Jack Challinor was complemented by a goal from Mike Carlin in a 3-3 draw - secured thanks to a late equaliser - before Rovers won on penalties.

"It was superb and, even though we have done well in the league, it was probably our best achievement since I took over three years ago," said manager Joe Carlin.

Jake Cragg was the player of the tournament for Woolston, who also reached the final of the Cadishead Tournament at the start of July.

Woolston train at Bennett's Recreation Ground on Fridays at 7pm and anyone wanting to play for the club can contact Joe on 07770 302460.
