MARK Beesley admits he had no complaints about his Warrington Town side’s opening-day defeat on Saturday afternoon.
And now, his focus is on making sure his players learn from what went wrong during their 3-1 reverse at King’s Lynn Town.
Yellows’ second National League North campaign got off to a difficult start, with their sole goal from Matty McDonald coming with the game already lost at 3-0 down.
Two goals from Linnets striker Gold Omatoyo, who also missed a first-half penalty, either side of a Tom Hughes effort ensured it was the hosts who started on the right foot, and Beesley admits that while the game was not without positives for his side, they were second-best on the day.
“We kept going at the end and got a goal back, maybe we could have nicked another to go to 3-2, but we were beaten by the better team. They were better than us on the day,” he said.
“Although we started great and should have gone 1-0 up – if that goes in, it’s maybe a bit different – and over the piece, we created some decent chances where we’ve got to do better.
“I’ve got no complaints about the result as they were better than us.
“They were at it and in my opinion, they’ll be right up there this season. They’ll definitely be in the top seven.”
Omatoyo’s ninth-minute opener – a close-range header from a corner – came against the run of play but King’s Lynn took control from then on, and it took a superb penalty save from goalkeeper Dan Atherton to keep Town in the game at half time.
However, Hughes reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box to net the hosts’ second just three minutes after half time and when Omatoyo headed in his second just shy of the hour, a heavy defeat loomed.
McDonald’s goal – a deft finish after substitute Gez Sithole had forced an error from home keeper Paul Jones – did at least make sure they weren’t kept off the scoresheet, however.
Beesley did take umbrage with the awarding of Omatoyo’s first goal, believing Atherton was fouled as he attempted to deal with Josh Hmami’s corner.
“We spoke before the game about set pieces and how important they are as they’ve got a big group and a good delivery,” he said.
“I think Dan is fouled – nine times out of 10, it’s a foul but he scores. We wobbled a bit and gave away a penalty, and to be fair to Dan he makes a great save.
“We were well in the game but if you start the second half like we did, you’re up against it.
“It’s something we’ve got to learn. We’ve got a group of young players and we’ve got to learn that this isn’t academy football – it’s real football and we’ve got to be at it all the time.
“Today we weren’t and we got punished.
“There’s a few positives and we can’t got too down. We’ve got another 45 games to go but it’s disappointing to start the season with a defeat.”
