BOTH individually and collectively, Matty Ashton insists there is still plenty more to come in 2023.

And with the flying winger having scored six tries in Warrington Wolves’ five-game winning start to the year, supporters will no doubt be excited by that prospect.

Ashton doubled his try tally for the year last time out as he scored an eight-minute hat-trick to help his side blow Leigh Leopards away and maintain their unbeaten start.

It means only Wigan’s Liam Marshall and Catalans’ Tom Johnstone, who both have eight touchdowns, can better his tally for the year so far.

Both in terms of his own game and the team’s, however, the England Knights international is focused solely on building up to a crescendo.

“There’s always things we can improve on,” he said.

“We’re getting the two points every week at the minute and that’s great, but we know we still have a lot to give.

“We’re not at our best yet but hopefully that’s still to come. There’s plenty more levels we can still go to.

“If you look at the team we have, we’ve got a lot of ability across the board with a lot of international talent in there so hopefully it can keep coming together and we can keep picking up the wins.

“It’s a tough position to get used to in terms of getting your body right for the big carries, but I feel like I’m improving each week.

“I’ve still got a lot to give and a lot to learn as I still feel like I’m in the growth stage of my game.

“I want to try and keep a try-per-game ratio going and I set my standards really high. Hopefully if I can keep that going, I can be in contention for Top Tryscorer.”

While injuries have forced the right edge to be chopped and changed, Ashton is part of a left-side unit that has been a constant throughout the year.

The partnership between himself, Stefan Ratchford, Ben Currie and George Williams is showing real signs of promise and looked at its most dangerous yet against Leigh last week.

Ahead of a trip to Castleford Tigers tomorrow, Ashton is happy with how things are coming together, especially given club captain Ratchford’s positional switch to the centres.

The Mend-A-Hose Jungle is a ground the speedster has enjoyed plenty of individual success at – his three appearances there have yielded six tries, including a hat-trick for Warrington in 2021 and a brace on his England Knights debut against Jamaica later that year.

“I do like playing there – I love it when the crowd get on your back,” he said.

“I’ve done quite well there so far so I want to keep that run going.

“We’ve got our confidence but we know they will be on a high after last week’s win – that took some pressure off them.

“They’re a quality team and they throw the ball around like a lot of sides do in this competition.

“The Jungle is a tough place to go with its small pitch and the hostile crowd, but I think we’re ready for it.”

On the left-edge link-up, he added: “We’ve got a lot of trust in each other and what we can all do.

“If someone makes an error or misses a tackle, we’re there to cover them so hopefully we can keep growing each week.

“I think me and Stef are connecting really well but we know there’s a lot we can still work on which we try and perfect each day.

“With the way things are going at the minute, we’re getting some tries down the left side and we want to keep that going but we also want to maintain a decent defensive record.”
