SEAN Williams’ late penalty fired Warrington Town through to the FA Trophy first round with a 2-1 win at Hebburn Town.

The midfielder kept his cool from the spot after Josh Seary had been fouled in the box to save the Yellows from a penalty shoot-out in the north.

Josh Amis had earlier cancelled out Oliver Martin’s second half penalty with his first goal of the season.

On another day, the Yellows could have been home and dry by half time in a repeat of the fixture from the same round last season.

That day, Warrington went home 2-0 winners but found the going harder this time.

They created plenty of chances in the first half, with Matty McDonald going close from the edge of the box inside two minutes.

Luke Duffy and Williams also went close with shots from the edge, while Josh Amis and Duffy both forced keeper Shaun Newbrook to beat shots away.

The only chance of note at the other end came a couple of minutes before half time when a free-kick was headed up in to the air and Robbie Spence’s header was tipped round the post at full stretch by Tony Thompson.

The hosts took the lead five minutes in to the second half though when Liam Henderson got on the wrong side of Evan Gumbs and went down in the box, with the referee pointing to the spot.

Martin sent Thompson the wrong way for 1-0.

The Yellows were at times frustrated by fouls in midfield, particularly on Bohan Dixon, but Hebburn retreated almost immediately and within nine minutes the visitors were level.

Williams’ free-kick from deep dropped for Amis in the box and he lashed home off the underside of the bar.

Although the referee had generally let the game flow for most of the game, he dished out five yellow cards following a skirmish between Williams and Joe Walton four minutes from time as penalties beckoned.

But in the final minute, substitutes Dec Walker and Seary linked up on the right and the on-loan Preston man was brought down in the box.

Williams stepped up and converted to the keeper’s left to put the Yellows in Monday’s draw.
