DARYL Powell believes George Williams is hitting some good form as his first full season with Warrington Wolves draws to a close.

However, he admits one of the main tasks with his half-back has been about “calming him down” to allow him to exert more influence with his creative talents.

During Monday’s defeat to Huddersfield, Williams was directly involved in five of The Wire’s seven tries – scoring one and assisting four.

In the season as a whole, Williams has made more carries (402) than any other Warrington player while he is second only to Matty Ashton in terms of metres gained (2,274).

Williams has also switched edges from right to left in recent times, which Powell believes has done him good as he bids for a spot in the England squad for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup.

“I think George has been great. If anything, sometimes he works a little bit too hard because he just wants to win,” he said following Monday’s 38-36 defeat.

“Sometimes it’s about calming him down to allow him to have a clearer head – that will allow us to win.

“They call him “The Metre-Eater” in the dressing room because he runs and makes massive metres.

“We talk a lot about slowing him down at times, but he did some great things out there. I think he’s been in really good form, playing class and working hard.

“He’s back on the left which I’d say is his preference and he’s coming good at the right time.”
