WARRINGTON Town’s unbeaten start to the season remains intact, but they dropped more points this evening.

They failed to convert a half-time lead into three points at Cantilever Park, with Atherton Collieries securing a deserved 1-1 draw.

Former Town and Warrington Rylands striker Scott Bakkor scored Colls’ equaliser after Mark Beesley’s side had taken an early lead thanks to Jordan Buckley’s goal.

The result leaves Yellows with eight points from their four league games.

WILL this be a game Warrington Town look back on and wonder?

Only time will tell, but it is not a game where they could say they were anywhere near their best.

Looking at it in a positive light, an oft-used footballing cliché is that if you cannot win a game, you make sure you don’t lose it.

While they enjoyed a bit of luck on that score at times – the woodwork, a superb Tony Thompson save and an acrobatic goalline clearance prevented further damage – a redeeming quality of a top side is being able to emerge with something from those situations.

And as the game went on, they pushed for a winner as Mark Beesley’s triple substitution started to take effect, with Luke Duffy and Stefan Mols providing a spark they badly needed.

It was the former who came closest to snatching a winner late on, sliding a shot agonisingly wide of the post after jinking his way into a shooting position.

For the most part, though, a point was the very least Atherton deserved for a performance of energy and intensity.

They never let Town completely settle and when they did win the ball back, they were quick to move it forward.

It was set-pieces, however, where they caused the most problems and eventually, it provided their route back into the game.

An inventive set piece of their own brought Jordan Buckley his goal early on, which was just reward for his lively start.

In the main, though, they did not cause Colls keeper Nico Defraitas-Hansen enough problems.

Eight points from four games still represents a more than respectable start to the campaign and having still not conceded from open play, they clearly remain a tough nut to crack.

However, they will want to get back in the winner’s circle sooner rather than later with a testing run of fixtures on the horizon.
