DARYL Powell says he sees Stefan Ratchford playing in the halves for Warrington Wolves this year and next.

And with a newly extended contract in his back pocket, the head coach has called upon the veteran to “really grab hold of” the stand-off position.

The 33-year-old, who signed a new two-year deal with The Wire earlier this week, is one of a number of half-back partners regular scrum-half George Williams has had this year.

Gareth Widdop, Riley Dean and Peter Mata’utia have also had runs there, but Powell sees Ratchford as his longer-term option at number six.

“There’s a few different reasons,” Powell said when asked why he wanted to keep Ratchford at the club.

“We are losing quite a few players who have been here for a number of years but Stef is one I didn’t want to leave the club.

“He’s had his Testimonial this year which he’s richly deserved. He’s a high-quality player who can play in a number of different positions so his versatility is awesome.

“I see him being our half-back next year and I want him to really grab hold of that role.

“He’s Warrington through-and-through and he wants to be a part of the journey we’re on.”
