LYMM RFC’S bid to win the Cheshire Cup for only the second time fell short in midweek.

The club took the trophy home for the first time back in 1989 and Anselmians, who have just secured promotion to the division below Lymm for next season, ensured that wait would go on.

Adam Fletcher’s side were beaten 22-11 in their semi-final clash played at Birkenhead Park, with Ed Morris scoring their only try.

Cormac Nolan also kicked two penalties, but Lymm will now switch their focus to their final league outing of the season at Kirkby Lonsdale on Saturday.

“It was a really disappointing night, but no real complaints,” Fletcher said.

“Anselmians were well organised and deserved their win.”

A victory against their second-bottom hosts will ensure Lymm finish fifth in the North Premier and end the campaign with six consecutive league victories.
