WHILE neutrals will have been thrilled with Lymm’s high-scoring victory at York on Saturday, director of rugby Adam Fletcher admits it was a game he “struggled to enjoy.”

However, he says the fact his side were able to hold on and bring home maximum points made doing so slightly easier.

Hearts were in mouths as York lined up a penalty with the game’s final kick to win the game, but it was missed and Lymm were able to celebrate a 43-41 victory – their fourth in succession.

Steve Pilkington’s second try looked to have the visitors in complete control at 40-24 up, with Tom Shard kicking his fifth conversion from six attempts.

However, three unconverted home tries piled on the pressure and Lymm needed a penalty from Shard, whose unerring accuracy off the tee proved decisive, to be sure of victory.

“Wow, what a game for the neutrals,” Fletcher opined post-match.

“I personally struggle to enjoy games like today but the five points makes it a lot easier.

“Our attack looked super sharp but our defence was pretty non-existent at times.

“York are a good side who play at a decent tempo. They put us under pressure every time they had the ball.

“We weren’t emotionally where we needed to be but credit to the boys, they hung on for the win.”

Aaron Rasheed, Nathan Beesley, Scott Redfern and Rob Makin all crossed before half-time for Lymm, whose next game is the Cheshire Cup semi-final against Anselmians at Birkenhead Park on Wednesday, kick off 7.30pm.

Meanwhile, Warrington’s superb defensive record continued on Saturday as they kept a third consecutive clean sheet.

Cockermouth were thrashed 57-0 at Grappenhall Sports Club as Stuart Beeley’s side backed up their shut-out wins over Orrell (67-0) and Bolton (85-0).

The head coach said: “I am obviously pleased with the win but the fact that we have not leaked any points in the last three matches indicates to me a developing steely attitude.”

Winger Jack Rigby scored a hat-trick of tries for Warrington, who sit fifth in the North Two West table ahead of their last game of the season at Tarleton on April 30.

Brothers Rorio and Leo Zheng both crossed for braces, with JP Hudson kicking six conversions from nine attempts.

Warrington’s other tries came courtesy of Tom Green and Jonny Evans.
