THERE have been few players who have been more prolific in Super League than Josh Charnley.

After all, the numbers speak for themselves.

As he collected a looping Stefan Ratchford pass to touch down at Toulouse’s Stade Ernest Wallon, the Warrington Wolves wingman joined a club so elite it has just two other members.

So now he has passed 200 Super League tries, the question now is how close can he get to making history?

Whether he comes close to or even beats the 247 tries scored by Leeds Rhinos legend Danny McGuire depends on not only him, but those around him too.

First of all, let’s have a look at the cold, hard facts.

Of Charnley’s 201 Super League touchdowns, 55 have come in a Wire shirt since he joined the club during the 2018 season including six in three games this season.

Five of them came in a 2010 loan spell at Hull KR while the remaining 141 came during a golden spell with Wigan Warriors.

McGuire’s former Leeds teammate Ryan Hall is between Charnley and the record – he has 212 tries and is contracted to play for Hull KR until the end of next season, so will fancy his chances of beating the mark himself.

So can Charnley get himself up to – or even past – the record? And can this Warrington Wolves side be the vehicle that takes him there?

Charnley turns 31 in June and while the decision on how long he continues to play is his and his alone, you would think he would fancy at least another two seasons after this one.

He is currently out of contract with The Wire at the end of the current season but if his fruitful start to the season continues, one can imagine the club wanting to extend that agreement subject of course to whether or not he would be keen to stay.

Barring any injuries, time does not look to be an issue so we now arrive at the question of whether he can threaten McGuire’s record as part of this Wire team.

The pattern of how the first three games have gone in terms of the way Warrington are attacking would seem to suggest he has every chance.

The right edge of which Charnley is part is looking extremely threatening, with George Williams and Peter Mata’utia enjoying promising starts to the season.

Already, he appears to be getting into scoring positions much more than he was doing last season as a result of Daryl Powell’s attacking structures and as a result, he is already around halfway to beating his 2021 try tally after just three games.

All of the ingredients appear to be in place, so let’s see what happens.
