HAVING taken a step in the right direction in Round Two, Daryl Powell will be keen not to change too much about his Warrington Wolves side.

However, there will be at least one enforced change with others possible in their first ever trip to Toulouse Olympique.

The obvious talking point is who steps in for Ben Currie in the second row after he was the most notable absentee from the 21-man squad named yesterday.

It is understood that his omission is precautionary and that his as-yet-unspecified injury is not serious, so the expectation is he will return to the side to face Catalans Dragons next week.

With Oliver Holmes still suspended, however, The Wire make the trip to the competition’s other French team without both of their first-choice edge forwards.

The most likely solution would appear to be drafting Jack Hughes into the starting line-up in Currie’s place.

On his return from a wrist injury, the skipper put in a good display through the middle against Castleford but Powell did say in pre-season he would be required to shift back into the second row on occasion, and it looks like the time has come.

Perhaps less clear is whether or not Ellis Longstaff moves over to the left edge so Hughes can occupy his familiar right edge role.

Mike Cooper’s presence in the squad suggests he is fit again after illness. If so, he should start in the front row alongside Robbie Mulhern with Joe Philbin reverting to the bench.

Daryl Clark is available again but his time in training may well have been limited, given his 11-day exclusion from all rugby-based activity under concussion protocols only expired on Wednesday.

As such, I have a feeling Danny Walker will start again at hooker with Clark coming off the bench as and when required.

I’d expect the backs to remain unchanged, with Josh Thewlis probably the unfortunate one to drop off the bench.

So with all that in mind, I expect the Wire team that takes the field at the Stade Ernest Wallon to look like this:

Ratchford; Charnley, Mata’utia, King, Ashton; Widdop, Williams; Mulhern, Walker, Cooper, Longstaff, Hughes, J Clark. Subs: Philbin, Bullock, Davis, D Clark

That would leave Josh Thewlis, Riley Dean, Ellis Robson and Rob Butler as the players to not make the cut.
