WARRINGTON Town conceded a last-ditch equaliser to be held to a draw by bottom side Grantham Town.

Goalkeeper Dan Atherton spilled a high free kick from the game's final kick to gift Elliott Durrell an equaliser, just minutes after Stefan Mols looked to have dramatically won the game for Town.

The substitute poked home Lewis Coulton's cross to give Yellows the lead after they had twice fallen behind.

Ricky Miller's penalty had given the Gingerbreads a half-time lead, which was cancelled out by Sean Williams' long-range strike just after the break.

Miller then finished off a counter-attack to put Granthan ahead before Buckley, who himself came off the bench, produced an assured finish to set up the late drama.

EVEN as Cantilever Park erupted with glee when Stefan Mols poked Warrington Town into a late lead, one could not help but wonder if there would be one final twist to this chaotic game.

Unfortunately from a Yellows perspective, there was. A catastrophic one.

As Dan Atherton dropped Elliott Durrell’s free kick to allow for a last-kick equaliser, a big chance to gain ground on those above went up in smoke.

Had they held on, Yellows would have been breathing down the necks of the top five, none of whom won their games this afternoon.

As it is, though, it is another share of the spoils that doesn’t really do anything for them.

Credit has to go to Grantham, who belied their position at the foot of the table with an excellent display that definitely merited a point at the very least.

While the penalty that gave them a half-time lead may have been contentious, there could be no argument that they deserved their lead.

Captain Durrell – by far the game’s stand-out player – dominated the midfield and drove his team on in a way none of Town’s engine room trio – with the possible exception of Sean Williams – could manage.

The hosts barely laid a glove on their lowly visitors in the first half in what was a display lacking in creativity and ideas.

With Jordan Buckley and latterly Mols being thrown on to add much-needed thrust and guile after the break, things looked more promising and twice, they fought their way back before the Spaniard turned in Lewis Coulton’s excellent cross for what looked like the winner.

So once again, another chance is passed up and although the play-off spots are no further away, there is one game less for them to break in.

The way in which Town’s players sunk to their knees in despair after the full-time whistle spoke of a mood of desolation, but there is no time to wallow in self pity.
