DESPITE being without several key players and losing a couple more during the match, Warrington RUFC’s senior colts rounded off 2021 on a winning note.

Jack Whittaker’s late penalty sealed a 15-14 win over their Chester counterparts in a game that saw them trail 14-0.

And that came despite Warrington losing scrum-half Jude Smith to injury, with fly-half Christian Johnston also spending time off the field.

Leo Zheng and Joe Pepperdine were the tryscorers as head coach Dan Johnston hailed the team’s determination.

"Sometimes you win through training and preparation, occasionally you succeed through heart and desire alone,” he said.

"The amount of disruption through injuries meant this would always come down to wanting it more than your opponent.

“Sometimes sport is that simple."

Warrington made a nightmare start to the game, with Chester scoring two converted tries inside the first 10 minutes.

Before the break, however, they hit back as Zheng took a quick-tap penalty to burrow over between the posts.

With Chester tiring, Pepperdine’s try in the corner got Warrington to within two points before Whittaker made the winning contribution from the kicking tee with just three minutes remaining.
