WITH the first team out of action, Warrington RUFC’s seconds got the chance at centre stage on Saturday.

Unfortunately, though, they came unstuck in the NOWIRUL Trophy as they were knocked out by their Broughton Park counterparts.

In a match between the top two sides in Division Two South, it was the league leaders who triumphed 31-14 as they mastered the wet and windy conditions.

That was despite Warrington drawing first blood – Dan Griffiths’ break up the middle and Joe Bruckshaw’s fast pass led to a penalty try as winger Ryan Eastwood was tackled high as he dived for the corner.

Broughton Park hit back with three tries but a second Warrington score via Griffiths, who joined the back of a driving maul and crashed over with the ball, reduced the half-time deficit to five points.

However, two home tries in the first 10 minutes of the second half took the game away from the visitors.

They will hope to bounce back when they host Macclesfield’s thirds on Saturday while at the same time, the first team are back in action with a trip to De La Salle.
