WARRINGTON Town made it two home wins from two against Atherton Collieries on Tuesday evening.

First-half goals from Matty Regan and Josh Amis proved enough for Yellows to bounce back from Saturday's defeat to Scarborough Athletic.

Regan powered home Luke Duffy's corner to give Paul Carden's side the lead midway through the first half, and the centre-half played a key role in the second goal just before half time.

His snapshot was parried by Colls keeper Luke Hutchinson into the path of Amis, who made no mistake from the rebound.

Here's Guardian sports reporter Matt Turner's verdict on how the game unfolded at Cantilever Park...

A RESPONSE was demanded from Warrington Town. They delivered.

If they were out to prove Saturday’s reverse at Scarborough was merely a blip, they went the right way about it.

Against an Atherton side riding the crest of a wave after their own decent start, this was a proficient and largely comfortable team display.

Warrington Guardian:

All the more impressive considering the volume and calibre of player unavailable to Paul Carden.

From the moment Matty Regan powered home a laser-guided Luke Duffy corner midway through the first half – which came shortly after the visitors’ Danny Lambert had crashed a warning shot off the crossbar – they rarely looked like giving up the advantage.

The moments Atherton did have – and there were a couple – were self-inflicted due to lapses in defensive concentration. Never did the visitors really look like truly opening the newly-adopted three-man Town defence up.

That change in formation may have raised eyebrows, with Carden usually sticking fastidiously to variations of 4-4-2 over the years, but it more than paid dividends.

With only ex-Yellow Marcus Cusani up front for the visitors, Regan and Mitch Duggan either side of skipper Mark Roberts had space to carry the ball out of defence.

Warrington Guardian:

That in turn gave full-backs James Baillie and Eddie Clarke license to get further forward, with the latter particularly effective.

Josh Amis had support closer to him in the form of Jack Mackreth, Luke Duffy and latterly Sean Miller while the unwavering Bohan Dixon and the tireless Ben Hough provided the midfield base.

Warrington Guardian:

When Amis prodded home the rebound after Regan’s snapshot was saved by Colls stopper Luke Hutchinson, it served only to put an exclamation point in the result.

Could they have gone for the jugular and run up a bigger scoreline? It looked that way either side of half time as they overran their visitors time and time again, but ultimately they were content to keep them at arm’s length.

So an impressive riposte and momentum can start to build again ahead of a busy weekend, with fellow fast starters Matlock Town and Bamber Bridge lying in wait.

The squad may be stretched, but Yellows are finding a way and that is no bad thing.
