HE had to come through some serious adversity, but Neal Petley was able to bring home a silver medal from the weekend's British Masters Athletics Championships.

The Warrington Athletics Club veteran was contending for victory in the over 50s 100m hurdles until he clattered hard into the tenth hurdle, landing awkwardly.

However, despite suffering what was suspected to be a fractured bone in his foot, Petley managed to stay upright to hold on for second place.

The injury meant he was unable to compete in the long jump and triple jump as planned, but fortunately X-rays showed he had only suffered a soft tissue injury.

Mervyn Ward was also in the medals at the Lytchett 10-mile road race in Dorset, which incorporated the British Masters Championship.

His time of 1hour 11mins 42secs was the 47th fastest overall but the third quickest for an athlete aged over 65, which won him a British Masters bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Steve Watmough ran his second-fastest half-marathon time in London as he won the over 55s age group at Sunday's Vitality Big Half-Marathon.

In a high-class field, he completed the course in 1hour 15mins 45secs, which was the 117th fastest time overall.

Closer to home, Louise Blizzard ran her fastest 10km time since 2015 at the Birchwood 10km road race.

She clocked 40mins 40secs to finish as the second fastest woman, the quickest woman aged over 45 and 20th place overall.
