JORDAN Buckley's brace allowed Warrington Town to make an impressive start to the 2021-22 season.

The striker scored in either half as Yellows saw off highly-fancied FC United of Manchester in front of more than 1,000 fans at a rainy Cantilever Park.

Town were without the services of several key players for a variety of reasons.

Striker Josh Amis was suspended while winger Jack Mackreth, who has returned to the club from Welsh side Bala Town, was unavailable as his international clearance had not been received in time.

With Matt Regan, Evan Gumbs and new signings Matty McDonald and Dom Reid all nursing injuries, the Yellows line-up had a slightly thrown-together look about it.

That said, they set about their task admirably and despite conceding the majority of possession, they looked a threat going forward.

Buckley had seen a couple of chances go astray before eventually giving Town the lead just shy of half time as he reacted well to a scramble inside the area.

If composure had deserted him earlier, it did not on this occasion as he slotted past FC stopper Dan Lavercombe.

For all their possession either side of the break, the visitors did not force Dan Atherton in the home goal into serious action until midway through the second half, when he superbly tipped Aaron Morris' header onto the crossbar.

Before then, Lavercombe had produced a fine save of his own to deny Town skipper Mark Roberts' downward header.

With the game nearing its end, though, Buckley got the second goal his endeavours in ploughing a lone furrow up front deserved.

Latching onto a long ball that beat the FC defence, his initial effort was saved by Lavercombe but the rebound fell kindly for the front man to tap into the empty net.
