WARRINGTON Rylands 1906 continued the build up to their debut season in the Northern Premier League with an impressive performance in a 1-1 draw with AFC Fylde, writes Garry Clarke.

Playing their last pre-season friendly before facing Hornchurch in the Non-League Super Cup this weekend, Rylands' National League North opponents came from from behind to snatch the draw.

Rylands started the game on the front foot with Callum Dolan drawing a good save from Fylde goalkeeper Bobby Jones in the opening minutes.

The extra quality of the visitors, who ply their trade three divisions higher than their hosts, soon started to show and they had the ball in Rylands' net in the 9th minute. However, Jack Simpson’s back heeled goal was ruled out when an offside flag was raised.

Both Ben Toillet and Stephen Dobie fired in shots which were just off target for Fylde before Rylands goalkeeper Graeme McCall pulled off a brilliant double save to deny Dobie from close range.

As Fylde pushed forward they left space at the back which Rylands tried to exploit on the break.

Midway through the half a cross-field pass picked out Rylands' trialist right back, his inside ball found Charlie Doyle whose shot flew across the face of the goal.

With half-time in sight, a long ball down field cleared the Fylde backline, outpacing any covering defenders Ste Mile raced onto the ball prodding it goalwards, Jones spread himself to divert the ball away for a corner.

The second half continued in the same open fashion with play switching from end to end and plenty of goalmouth action to keep the large Gorsey Lane crowd entertained.

Kane Drummond and Mike Simpson both went close in the opening minutes of the second half while McCall pulled off another good save to keep out a Dobie shot.

Rylands broke the deadlock on the hour mark when Charlie Doyle played the ball forward. As it dropped over his shoulder Dolan needed one touch to control the ball, his second touch placed the ball in the Fylde net leaving Jones a helpless bystander.

A mazy Drummond run through the heart of the Fylde defence 10 minutes later set up Mike Simpson, his shot was blocked and Luke Sephton screwed the rebound inches wide.

Fylde were back on level terms in the 75th minute. Nick Houghton held off challenges from two defenders to fire a shot from the edge of the area into the bottom corner of the net.

The final 10 minutes saw both sides go close to snatching a winning goal but neither side could make the breakthrough, and a draw was a fair result between two evenly matched teams.
