AS Woolston Rovers aim to continue their promising start to the campaign, head coach Mal Holt has hailed the unity at the club.

Saturday’s impressive win over Rochdale Mayfield followed an opening-day victory at neighbours Crosfields and it leaves Rovers top of League C in the National Conference League.

The Green and Golds travel to Oldham St Annes on Saturday and Holt insists there is plenty more to come.

“The start we have had has been very pleasing and the exciting thing is that we know we have a lot more improvement in us,” he said.

“The whole open-age squad is really united and that is showing on the field.

“We had another couple of players who were promoted to the NCL side after impressing in the NWML (North West Men’s League) team over the past couple of weeks and there are others who are knocking on the door.”

Also in League C, Crosfields’ bid for a first win of the campaign sees them host Leigh Miners Rangers at Hood Lane.

Despite losing 20-16 at Clock Face Miners last time out, head coach Ian Boden saw plenty of reasons to be positive.

“This is probably the youngest first team I've seen at Crosfields, and I am very proud of their effort and character,” he said.

“Many teams’ heads would have dropped after taking that relentless battering from their huge forwards.

“As they gel and improve, they will become smarter and cleverer around the ruck, which Clock Face slowed down all the time.

“Another positive was Morgan Williams stepping up to the first team for his debut – he took it in his stride no problem."

They also boast the division’s top try-scorer (Matty Nash, 5) and point-scorer (Matty Rudd, 36).
