MAL Holt described Saturday’s win over Rochdale Mayfield as one of the best of his time at Woolston Rovers.

The National Conference League’s regionalised set-up means Division Two side Woolston were paired with an established Premier Division force in Mayfield, but they stepped up to the task admirably.

Two tries from Dan Griffiths and one each from Adam Files, Dan Fearnley, Josh Sudlow and Rob Griffiths was enough to secure a 34-14 win at Monk Sports Club.

The visitors’ indiscipline caught up with them as they picked up an astonishing four yellow cards plus a red card for prop Simon Moore – at one stage they had just 10 players on the field.

“That was one of the best results in my time at Woolston,” Holt exclaimed after the game.

“It was a very physical and aggressive game with some meaty hits – legal and illegal – that led to a number of disagreements throughout the 80 minutes.

“We just played as we have done for the last few weeks – our pack was fantastic throughout and stood toe-to-toe with their higher-league opponents, allowing our backs to hurt Rochdale all afternoon.

“We have set our standard again today and we just need to continue playing in this manner.

“(Assistant coach) Rob Campbell and myself are working hard to create a great spirit and togetherness at the club and results like today show that we are getting there.”
