LEE Briers has it within him to be “a really good head coach,” Steve Price has said.

He has also backed the abilities of his other assistant coach Andrew Henderson after it was confirmed both would be leaving the club alongside him and head of analysts Jack Phillips at the end of the season.

It brings a 25-year association with the club to an end for Briers, who has been on the coaching staff since his glittering playing career ended in 2013.

Price believes neither Briers nor Henderson will be “lost to the game” from next year as they look for the next chapter in their coaching careers.

“He’s certainly got the attributes to be a really good head coach,” he said of Briers.

“He understands and sees things sometimes better than anyone in the game.

“Whether he wants to be a head coach or not is a decision for Lee. He’s given really good service to our rugby league club.

“Hopefully Hendo can find a gig somewhere as he’s a wonderful up-and-coming coach.

“Briersy, Hendo and JP have been fantastic.

“They’re rock solid and they have been a great support for me, hopefully we can finish it off how we’d like to.

“They’re great men and I hope it doesn’t take too long to sort their futures out going forward.

“I’m confident they won’t be lost to the game because they’re terrific men and great at their job.”

As Briers was stepping away from the Wire number six shirt he made his own, a young Joe Philbin was about to make the transition from the academy to the first team.

He too believes the club’s all-time record points scorer will “land on his feet.”

“Briersy started coaching us at the academy while he was still playing,” the prop said.

“He was really good at making you understand your role and why you do things but also understanding other peoples’ roles in case you had to play out of position. That’s what I took from him as a young player.

“I signed my first full-time deal for 2014 and he was meant to still be playing that year.

“I was going into a very old team at the time with people like Trent Waterhouse around and it was nerve-wracking, but Briersy said he would take me under his wing.

“And then of course, he retired just as we were meant to start pre-season!

“He’s been a really big help and a massive part of the club for the past 25 years.

“I’m loving seeing all the articles going out about him because he deserves it as an absolute club legend. Playing wise, he’s the best half-back Warrington’s had.

“I reckon he will land on his feet – someone will exploit and get good value out of his rugby brain.”
