MATTY Ashton can consider himself unlucky not to be in the Warrington Wolves first team currently, head coach Steve Price admits.

However, the Wire boss confirmed the livewire 22-year-old will come into the side for next week’s Challenge Cup trip to former club Swinton Lions.

Ashton, who finished as Wolves’ top tryscorer in his debut season in 2020, was left out of the matchday 17 for yesterday’s 44-12 win over Leigh Centurions having only made a cameo appearance off the bench in the previous week’s loss to Castleford Tigers.

Price explained the outside back’s omission and declared him to be unlucky to be down the pecking order.

“Matty’s been unfortunate – he’s been outstanding in pre-season but he’s got a handy player in front of him in Stef Ratchford,” Price said after the Leigh game.

“We wanted to go a little bit bigger on the bench today so that was the reason.

“He’ll be playing against Swinton next week.”
