TEENAGE Warrington Wolves stand-off Riley Dean has joined Betfred Championship side York City Knights on loan for the 2021 season.

The deal, following York losing the services of ex-Wire half-back Morgan Smith tyo a ruptured ACL in pre-season training, includes a two-week recall option.

The highly-rated former Siddal junior, formerly a captain of the Wolves academy team, has made two first team appearances in the primrose and blue to date as well as representing England Academy in 2019.

With no reserves return date set, the move presents an opportunity for the 19-year-old to gain some valuable first-team experience with one of the Championship’s strongest emerging sides.

“Going out on loan was something I’d been thinking about and it was more about making the right move for me, and York is a great option with a good squad and coaching staff behind it," said Dean.

“I’m hoping to be able to show a good version of myself and enhance the team if I’m given the opportunity to hopefully get some game time under my belt.”

Riley joins Samy Kibula and Cole Oakley (Newcastle Thunder) and Keanan Brand (Leigh Centurions) in taking up the option of going out on loan.

He made his Super League debut against St Helens at home at the age of 17 in 2019, covering for the injured Blake Austin.

Riley was called up to the Ireland squad for World Cup qualifiers that year too.

He joins former Wire player Ryan Atkins in the 2021 York squad.
