PAUL Carden says his Warrington Town side “showed both sides of the game” as they got the new season off to a flying start.

They were impressive 2-0 victors at a Basford United side who are alongside them among the favourites for promotion from the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division.

After Jack Dunn had put them ahead, Bohan Dixon converted a penalty before the break to put Town in control.

Yellows then withstood plenty of second-half pressure to return from Nottingham with three hard-earned points.

“I’ll be really pleased every Saturday if we perform like that because we showed both sides of the game,” Carden said.

“I thought once the game settled down, we were in a really good rhythm and controlled it.

“We scored a really good first goal and had a chance after the penalty.

“It opened up for Charlie Munro and he put it over the bar. If that would have gone in, at 3-0 down we really would have had them on the ropes.

“They’ve regrouped at half time and there was a pretty strong breeze behind them.

“Without being disrespectful, when you reduce a team like Basford to long balls, you know you’ve done something right.

“In those moments when they are launching it into the box, we’re dealing with it. We stood really strong and made blocks.”
